Busy

Hello again,

I know I haven’t posted anything for awhile, but soon I will have plenty of time to get back to my original schedule.

Lately, I’ve almost exclusively been working on research for my Master’s Thesis (Defense is April 15th) and I have been getting some job applications done.  I’m really interested in reading some more, but the only real thing I’ve had time for lately is a bit of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and some SC2.  I just finished AC:B, and really enjoyed it.  In the next couple of days I’m going to put up a review of the game on my game analyses page ( blinkcomputing.net/analyses.html ), so go take a look there soon.  I’m super excited to be nearly done with school, and also very excited about the Rockies season starting up in early April.

I look forward to writing here again soon!

New Car

I just bought a 2011 Ford Fiesta!  Here’s a nice image of my car.

I’m pretty stoked about it, and especially excited about its 40mpgs.  This is my first new car, and although it was quite a process getting it, I’m glad I’m done with that!

Books:

The 4-Hour Workweek

The 4-Hour Workweek

I’m still chugging through this one, and starting to enjoy it more and more.  In the most recent chapters Ferriss suggests to get a virtual assistant and become comfortable automating anything that can be automated.  He also chimes in on how important it is to be comfortable making sacrifices and using the 80/20 principle to realize that it’s always important to be efficient, and not waste double your time improving sales 5%.  For the most part, I don’t think there is anything new here for me, except the advise he gives about finding a niche market and inventing a product that requires little maintenance and provides excellent income.  I plan on putting the advice in this book to use and using some of my talents as a programmer, and some information from my information retrieval class to put together a nice little game-blog/news page that conveniently organizes data from main game sites, and major developers news, and various forums.  I think this site has potential to, at least, be useful for myself.

Huckleberry Finn

Huckleberry Finn

I really should have read Tom Sawyer first, but I’m really starting to enjoy this tale about Huck Finn.  I’m looking forward to finishing this book in the next week or so, and I’ll post a full review and chime in on what I enjoyed most about it.

Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid

Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid

I’m really getting into this book as well, which means I’m basically going to be reading everything this weekend and probably less time for games.. :-(  Hofstadter spends a lot of energy describing closed loops and recursion in detail in the first couple hundred pages using alternating stories and technical sections.  The most recent story was about a meta-genie, and involved some very interesting concepts.  I’ll go into more detail on this one in the philosophy section later this week, but this book is a great way to start my day, and is a nice change of pace from most technical stuff I have been reading.

Technology:

I’m so ridiculously excited for Google Music.  I don’t really know how to put it any other way.  Currently I spend time listening to Pandora, record songs I like, then load grooveshark and listen to the entire album.  Then I essentially decide if I want to buy it, order it of Amazon and enjoy.  Google Music will make my life so much easier.  Essentially I expect gMusic to allow me to, listen to my music on a cloud, and thus not require me to store my music anywhere anymore, listen to similar music for free, and listen to albums for free, and allow me to purchase music.  It’s everything in one place!  I’m super stoked, and can’t wait for Google Music to be released.

Sports:

The Rockies have lost 2 in a row and have fallen off a bit.  Luckily we will be playing the Giants soon, and will still have a chance at getting back into this.  The Rocks have some major injuries in CarGo’s wrist and Hammel’s ‘dead arm’.  Actually hearing about Hammel’s injury is a relief to me, as I was worried he was just getting tired and losing it.  Hopefully CarGo can get some time to recover a bit and get some of that power back.  I fully expect the Rockies to make a run out of this, and likely one that comes down to the wire.  I was sad to hear about the Broncos receiver, and wish his family the best.  The Buffs won this past weekend, and actually it sounded like they did a pretty good job.  The Broncos also won a pretty one-sided decision against the Seahawks which was nice t here, and our new WR was outstanding.  I look forward to seeing the Broncos keeping it going in the next few weeks.

Adios!  Go Rockies!

New Plans

Hello again,

The new blog plan is to for me to write two entries a week, on Tuesday and Thursday, with occasional others thrown in(likely once every couple weeks).  Tuesday’s blog will contain information on Books, Sports, and Technology.  Thursday’s blog will contain reviews on Music, Video Games, and some philosophic discussion.

Music:

Weezer — Hurley

Along with the new Linkin Park album, I recently purchased this CD.  I listened to it intently a couple times today while I was reading, and I have to note that this CD is standard Weezer.  The rock melodies are catching, the lyrics are humorous.  This CD is different in the fact that it is much lighter than previous Weezer albums, and that it’s title is much differently themed(not a color…).  I would recommend this to those familiar and comfortable with previous Weezer albums.  For everyone else, there is nothing new here, and if anything, this album is pretty bland and has no contrast between songs.

Video Games:

I’ve been playing this came since it came out, and although I’m getting a bit tired of the single player, I find the multi player very challenging and dynamic.  Playing other players is quite fun, as it really puts to the test the complex game of Rock Paper Scissors, idealized in SCII.  The only real concern I have so far is the lack of good custom maps.  Even the ones recommended by Blizzard aren’t very unique or challenging, and offer very little variety from the current SCII maps.  I wonder if this issue has more to do with the lack of being able to post sufficient sized maps to the servers, or the badly designed recommendation engine…. or maybe, as I think… there just aren’t that many innovative maps out yet.  In the next few weeks I’m going to try my luck at creating a unique experience through a SCII map and get it released.

Philosophy: Decontamination

Contamination is the idea that when we process information and make a judgement about it we modify it in a way based on previous/current stimuli and previous responses. The question really is, do we make decisions based on those variables?, or do we actually make decisions(absolute), and then our responses are modified by those variables?

This subject is what my Master’s thesis will be based on, and has a ton of applications in many fields.  Including, map-rankings, netflix reviews, taste-testings… etc.  If one can decontaminate data sequences from certain kinds of sequential effects, than one can eliminate many redundant trials currently used to create sufficient prediction models.  As my research progresses, I will post what I am working on here.

Friday

It’s been a busy week, hence the lack of any posts.

Sports:

The Rockies have won 7 straight, hopefully 8 tonight and once again are making a September playoff push.  The Buffs won and play Cal on Saturday, which I’m very much looking forward too, and the Broncos start up this weekend as well.  Not really a ton to say here, the Rockies have won with clutch hitting, great comebacks and solid pitching.  The Buffs beat a mediocre CSU team, and did a good job resting some starters early in the season.

Tech:

The G2 smartphone came out today through T-Mobile, and as I’m a G1 owner, and do like android I thought I should not this a bit.  Unfortunately the processor is pretty weak, and dubbed down for better battery life.  The keyboard has one fewer row as the numbers and the qwerty top row are now share(makes sense!).  I’m not to found of it yet, and still have another few months to either stay with T-mobile or move to another carrier.

I’ve spent the last few weeks looking at a new car, and after finding the one I want, and agreeing to terms with a dealership I’ve found out that the car is being held for quality assurance by Ford.  I’m disappointed, and mostly just frustrated as I was prepared with everything for getting the car today.  I was looking at a Ford Fiesta SE, with the 203a package(sound/sport), blue, sedan.  I really would like this car upgrade as it gets great gas-mileage and is really quite fun to drive.  Hopefully the hold will end soon and I’ll be able to pick it up.

TV:

I don’t usually include this topic, but recently I’ve been running Netflix on my PS3 and watching the Seasons of Lost.  I really, really, like this show and find it quite entertaining, ridiculous, and brilliant.  Hopefully it will stay this way, all the way to the end.

Video Games:

I’m still mainly playing SC2, and sadly my Xbox360 redlighted so I’m going to be playing the PC, DS, and PS3 until early November when I get the $400 kinect 250gb bundle.  Nothing real new to post about the game as I’ve been really busy with this car thing, and research for school.  I have, though, moved up to rank 32 in Platinum.  When I get some time to play I’ll make a push for Diamond.

That’s it for today, I’ll revise this post and likely add an entry this weekend as I was short 2 this week.

The First of Many

This entry begins the first of many, multi-purpose review/analysis entries.

Sports:  A lot of my focus on sports will be with the Colorado Rockies, as that is my favorite Baseball team, and Baseball is my favorite sport.  I’ll also do some brief analysis on various other major issues within sports, and likely cover other local teams(Broncos, Buffs, Nuggets, Avs) when their seasons role around.

Yesterday was a make up game with the Rockies playing the Phillies.  The Rockies lost 12-11 in a crazy game that included the Rocks having three 4-run leads, and the Phillies had a nine run inning.  Unfortunately the Rockies fell back to 6.5 out of the wildcard with this loss, and it’s going to take somewhat of a miracle for them to make the playoffs this year(even moreso than 2007).  In any case it’s been a good season, and it’s really unfortunate that our pitching wasn’t consistent and our hitting was terrible on the road.  I hope for a comeback, but more than that I just want it to be close down the stretch.

Books:

The 4-Hour Workweek

The 4-Hour Workweek

This is my ‘fun’ read, but I wouldn’t really call this book ‘fun’… The first few chapters try to convince you that you aren’t excited, and that you never will be doing what society dictates as normal.  So, maybe you should find a really efficient way to do some work to make enough money to do whatever it is you want to do.  In all honesty, so far there is nothing in this book that changes my thought process.  I’ve spent the majority of my life being in a position of responsibility, and for the first time since…. maybe middle school I finally have time to do what I want to do, and am going to do it.  I find it sad, and probably completely accurate that the majority of people are bored in their jobs, and really despise what they do on a day to day basis.  Anyways, hopefully this book becomes a bit less depressing and proves some usefulness to me as I continue to read it.

Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid

Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid

This is my ‘thick’ read.  In this book, Hofstadter tries to equate a famous artist, mathematician, and musician by referring to closed-loops.  It is very mathy, and does a great job describing tough material in two ways, a story and an essay of sorts.  So far this book has proved a good read, and hopefully without being to distracted by what is going on this weekend, I’ll get a few more chapters read out of it, and will reference one of the stories in Monday’s blog.

Huckleberry Finn

Huckleberry Finn

This is my ‘classic’ read.  I know, who hasn’t read this book… apparently me.  Anyways, so far I really enjoy it, and I think I’ll find a lot of similarities to the adventuring in the book to my own childhood, fantasizing things that aren’t happening, hanging out with friends while adventuring the world, etc.  I did note that it is clear that Twain is suffering when he wrote this book (likely the loss of his daughter) as he describes mourning in an all-to descriptive light early on in the book.  Expect more about this book on Monday as well.

Video Games:

As my Xbox360 died on me this last week, after a good 4+ years I might add, I will be mainly posting reviews and analysis of PC/DS/PS3 games.  When I get my new 360 in November(the 250gb kinect bundle), I will review some older stuff.

Yes, Blizzard, I love you… sooo very much.  Even though I’m not the biggest StarCraft fan, I am a huge Blizzard fan.  The philosophy of not releasing a game until it is done is quite effective for them, and frustrating as hell for me.  I look forward to playing Diablo 3 at Blizzcon this year, and would really like a beta key for that game.  I’ve beeng chugging away through SC2′s campaign and have been playing a few multiplayer games in the gold league.  Honestly, with a bit more time, I don’t think I’d have any trouble moving up to Platinum.  The story in SC2, is amazing.  After each mission there are 2 in-game cut scenes and occasionally there are major cut scenes thrown in.  The characters are dynamic, humorous, and attractive.  I look forward to finishing the last few missions of the campaign and giving a full review here.

That’s it for today, expect the other three categories to be covered later this week, Tech, Music, and Philosophy.

Gaming

Art has always been in the eye of the beholder.  A beautiful song, a calming portrait, a great book… all accepted forms of art.  One of the newer versions of art, and most debated, is video games.

For some reason video games get a really bad rap for being all kinds of things.  Social deterrents, violence inducers, life-substitutes, and my favorite, brain nullifiers.  The real truth about video games is really quite complex.  Video games help with hand-eye coordination, they help develop social and leadership skills, and are actually a strong deterrent for violence in youth.  I’m not going to sit here and cite 20 references for what I just said, because I don’t have to.  Do the research you’ll see published papers referencing those truths.  Sadly, because of this (incorrect) notion of video games being a complete waste of time, the art form that exists in this realm is not noted.

The generally accepted definition of ‘art’ is:  ‘Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging symbolic elements in a way that influences and affects the sense, emotions, and/or intellect’ (wikipedia.org).  Video games contain beautiful environments, which on their own could be considered art, but that’s not what I’m referring to when I say video games are art.  I’m referring to the combination of that scenery, with character interaction, the combination of different types of game-play, the flow of the game, and the general feelings created by music, sounds, and all of these variables.  This is art, at it’s highest level.  A level in which a person can be teleported into another believable, emotionally satisfying existence.  It’s an art where the creators create an entire new world, and box you in it in a way that you only see what they want you to.  Much like a famous painter frames his scene in the way he wants you to see it.

Well, now I’m done with this rant, and I really hope you took something from it.  If you disagree, post a comment, let’s talk about it!

Expect what I promised in my first entry on friday, normal reviews, and discussion on various topics, but today was a rant day… and maybe every wednesday will be.. we’ll have to see.
